Scope and Content Connel Ferry Bridge, Argyll & Bute Second only to the Forth Bridge in scale, this steel cantilever bridge was built in 1903 by the Caledonian Railway for its branch to Ballachulish, crossing the Falls of Lora, a narrow point in Loch Etive through which the sea tide ebbs and flows. This shows the bridge from the south-east. The three masonry approach spans at each end are built of locally quarried granite. Note that the legs of the cantilevers are inclined to minimise the obstruction of the waterway. The engineer for the bridge was H M Brunel. The line to Ballachulish, a slate-quarrying village, was lightly used, and was closed in 1965. It was then converted into a road bridge, though it had carried road traffic beside the railway since about 1910. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
