Scope and Content Connel Ferry Bridge, Argyll & Bute This steel cantilever bridge, second only to the Forth Bridge in scale, was built in 1903 by the Caledonian Railway for its branch to Ballachulish, across the Falls of Lora, a narrow point on Loch Etive through which the sea flows. This shows the deck of the bridge looking north, after the railway had closed. The roadway on the left was added soon after the bridge was completed. The stone parapets are above the masonry approach at this end of the bridge. The engineer for the bridge was H M Brunel. The line to Ballachulish, a slate-quarrying village, was lightly used, but was intended by the Caledonian Railway as the first stage in a route to Fort William. Growth of motor traffic ended that dream. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
