Scope and Content Dean Bridge, Queensferry Road, Edinburgh This remarkable urban viaduct was designed by Thomas Telford, and built in 1829-31 to improve communications between Edinburgh and the Queen's Ferry to Fife, and to open up the north-west bank of the Water of Leith for house-building. This shows the south end of the bridge from the west. The four arches all have deep arches supporting the carriageway, and lighter arches supporting the footpaths. These light arches were termed 'ascentitious' arches by Telford. The Dean Bridge is recognised as one of Telford's masterpieces. The arches are, as in many large bridges, hollow, with the roadway supported on internal walls running the length of the bridge. It still carries main road traffic.
