Scope and Content Duke Street Engraving Works, Nos 18-24 Ark Lane, Glasgow David Fulton & Co, engravers to calico printers, had this works built in 1878. In the late 19th century, calico printing was a major west of Scotland industry, which became increasingly reliant on mechanical printing using engraved rollers. This shows the works from the north-east. Note the extensive glazing - engraving was a hand craft requiring a good, even light. The eastern section of the works was more simply detailed than the offices at the west end. Note the ornamented chimney. This works operated into the 1960s, but has since been closed and demolished. It was the last of a number of such works in central Glasgow. The last textile printing works in central Scotland was at Ashfield, near Dunblane which closed in the 1970s.
