Scope and Content Duke Street Engraving Works, Nos 18-24 Ark Lane, Glasgow This works was built in 1878 for David Fulton & Co, engravers to calico printers. In the late 19th century calico printing was a major west of Scotland industry, and was increasingly reliant on mechanical printing using engraved rollers. This shows the west end of the works. Note the extensive glazing - engraving was a hand craft requiring a good, even light. Note also the Classical detailing, in the manner of Alexander 'Greek' Thomson, particularly suited to large glazed areas. This works operated into the 1960s, but has since been closed and demolished. It was the last of a number of such works in central Glasgow. The last textile printing works in central Scotland was at Ashfield, near Dunblane which closed in the 1970s.
