Scope and Content Catrine Mill, Catrine, East Ayrshire This village was founded in 1787 by David Dale and Sir Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle round a cotton-spinning mill. A bleachworks was added later, and the power system of the mills remodelled in about 1827, and again in 1947. This shows one of the oldest parts of the bleachworks, beside the River Ayr below the weir from which the mill water supply was drawn. These buildings probably date from the 1820s. Catrine became the property of James Finlay & Co, who developed it as an integrated works, making cotton sheets, pillowcases, towels and so on for shipping lines, hotels and domestic users. The bleachworks finished these goods. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
