Scope and Content Grain mills on the River Kelvin, Partick, Glasgow This section of the River Kelvin was an important grain milling area from the middle ages, with at least five water-powered corn mills. The development of roller milling of flour resulted in the rebuilding of two of these in the late 19th century. This shows the Regent Flour Mills (left), built 1887-90 for John Ure, and on the right, the Scotstoun Flour Mills, rebuilt from 1877 as a roller mill. In the distance are the Bishop Mills, still making provender for animals in the 1960s. The Regent Mills were out of use by 1967, having been owned since 1905 by the Scottish Co-operative Wholesale Society, and have since been demolished. The site is a car park. The Bishop Mills are now flats. Part of Scotstoun Mills is still working. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
