Scope and Content Lothian Road Station, Lothian Road, Edinburgh When the Caledonian Railway reached Edinburgh in 1848 it had plans for a large and elaborate terminus, but the money ran out before this could be built. Between then and 1870 both passenger and goods trains terminated at a station at Lothian Road. This shows the frontage to Lothian Road of the former Lothian Road Goods Station as it existed in 1967. The ashlar frontage of the central bay may have been part of the original Lothian Road passenger station. The original Lothian Road passenger station was supplanted in 1870 by a temporary station at the west end of Princes Street. A permanent station was opened on this site in 1894. The Lothian Road goods station remained open until 1965. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
