Scope and Content Fowler's Brewery, High Street, Prestonpans, East Lothian This brewery, with early 18th-century origins, was latterly owned by John Fowler & Co Ltd. It was a typical medium-sized brewery, serving mainly local markets, but producing 'Fowler's Wee Heavy', a popular strong ale, sold throughout Scotland. This shows the street frontage of the brewery from the south-east. It was constructed round a courtyard, with the maltings on the street side. The malt kiln is in the centre of this view, with the malting floors to the left. In the late 1950s and early 1960s a wave of takeovers swept over British brewing, eliminating many old-established family brewing firms, including this one, which was taken over by United Brewers in 1960, who then closed this brewery.
