Scope and Content Holyrood Laundry, Lower London Road, Edinburgh This was a large mechanical laundry of a type which became popular in the late 19th century, when steam-driven laundry machinery was developed. It was one of the largest concerns of its type in Edinburgh. This shows the complex from the south-west, with the office block on the left, and the main laundry range beyond. The unusually slender chimney served the boiler house which supplied hot water as well as, originally, steam for power. This laundry remained in use until the 1980s, probably serving hotels and guest houses, as the market for household laundry services declined sharply from the late 1950s with the widespread availability of washing machines.
