Scope and Content Former Craigwell Brewery, No 65 Calton Road, Edinburgh Founded in the mid-19th century by Charles Blair, this brewery's maltings sits on one side of Calton Road while the rest of the brewery lies on the other, in premises apparently constructed in the late 19th century. This shows the maltings of the former Balmoral Brewery, with the kiln for drying the malt in the centre, with its pyramidal roof, and the malting floors to the right. The corner of the brewery proper is on the left. This brewery became part of Gordon and Blair Ltd, an amalgamation of the 1890s. By 1967 it had become a wholesale grocery warehouse. The complex was converted into flats in the 1980s by Nicholas Groves-Raines, architect. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
