Scope and Content Former Craigwell Brewery, No 65 Calton Road, Edinburgh This brewery was founded in the mid-19th century by Charles Blair, and was on a split site with maltings on one side of the road and the rest of the brewery on the other, in premises apparently constructed in the late 19th century. This shows the malting kiln, from the south west, with its louvres. This building would have housed the shallow cast iron tanks used to cool the wort before fermentation, using a current of air through the louvres. This brewery became part of Gordon & Blair Ltd, an amalgamation of the 1890s. The complex was converted into flats and townhouses by Nicholas Groves-Raines Architects and completed in 1987.
