Scope and Content Telephone Exchange, Nos 124-30 Cubie Street, Glasgow Dating from 1910, this building was one of the first telephone exchanges built in Glasgow by the Post Office after it took over the Glasgow telephone system from Glasgow Corporation. This shows the exchange from the north-east. It is very English in character, with its brick and Portland Stone construction, and is in the Edwardian Baroque style deemed suitable for public buildings in the early 20th century. This exchange was a manual one, with women and girls sitting at switchboards and physically connecting callers to the correct lines. It was not converted to automatic operation, and became a Post Office store. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
