Scope and Content Mineral Water Factory, Burnfoot Lane, Falkirk, Stirlingshire (Falkirk council area) This works was established by R Barr Ltd, to make aerated waters, which became popular beverages in the late 19th century. The firm was the parent of the now better-known AG Barr of Glasgow, makers of Irn Bru. This view shows the oldest part of the works, from the south east. Note the masonry front of the building; the sides and rear wall were made of red brick, as were the one and two-storey workshops to the right. Fizzy drinks, such as lemonade, kola, ginger beer and American cream soda, are very popular in Scotland, Firms like Barrs made them and sold them in returnable screw-topped bottles, before cans and plastic bottles were developed.
