Scope and Content Atlantic Mills, No 26 Walkinshaw Street, Glasgow This works was founded by D & J Anderson, shirting manufacturers, in 1864, and subsequently extended. This was one of the last firms of textile manufacturers to survive in the east end of Glasgow, not closing until the 1960s. This shows the Baltic Street frontage of the works, with its tall boiler house chimney. The main part of the factory was behind the buildings seen here, and consisted of a large range of weaving sheds, with a three-storeyed warehouse block. The manufacture of shirtings was a specialised branch of the weaving trade, high class, and fashion-dependent. Mixed cotton and worsted fabrics were often made, in addition to pure cottons. Andersons were the one of the last Glasgow firms in this trade. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
