Scope and Content Queen's Dock, Glasgow Built in 1872-80 to handle the city's growing trade, this dock had two long basins, with a canting basin at the entrance, originally spanned by a swing bridge. Single-storeyed transit sheds line three of the quays. This shows the east end of the north basin, with a transit shed on the quay. The larger of the two vessels is a hopper barge for transporting dredgings to the dumping grounds, and the smaller is a diving bell vessel, used for underwater inspections. Queen's Dock was Glasgow's first large dock. It was followed in the 1890s by Prince's Dock, on the south side of the river. Queen's Dock closed at the end of 1969, and was filled with rubble from demolished buildings. It has now been built over. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
