Scope and Content Queen's Dock, Glasgow This dock was built in 1872-80 to handle the city's growing trade. It had two long basins, with a canting basin at the entrance, which was originally spanned by a swing bridge. Three of the quays were lined with single-storeyed transit sheds. This shows the south basin, looking west to the entrance. The electric cranes were installed after World War II. The single-storeyed sheds were intended to store goods for short periods before or after shipment. Queen's Dock was Glasgow's first large dock. It was followed in the 1890s by Prince's Dock, on the south side of the river. Queen's Dock closed at the end of 1969, and was filled with rubble from demolished buildings. It has now been built over. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
