Scope and Content North rotunda, Glasgow Harbour Tunnel, Finnieston Quay, Glasgow The tunnel was built to relieve congestion on the Glasgow (Jamaica Street) bridge, at that time the lowest road bridge across the Clyde. It had hydraulic lifts at each end to lower and raise horse lorries, and stairs to a separate tunnel for pedestrians. This shows the north rotunda, which housed the hydraulic lifts at this end. The entrances for vehicles were on the left side of the building, and the pedestrian entrances are the arched doorways on the right. Although the tunnel was closed to road vehicles in the 1940s, it stayed open to pedestrians until the 1980s. The vehicular tunnels have since been filled with sand, while the north rotunda is now a casino. The accumulator tower has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
