Description Glasgow, Harbour Tunnel, Northern Entrance View of N lift building and hydraulic accumulator tunnel

Date 28/1/1967

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 589805

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content North rotunda, Glasgow Harbour Tunnel, Finnieston Quay, Glasgow The tunnel was built to relieve congestion on the Glasgow (Jamaica Street) bridge, at that time the lowest road bridge across the Clyde. It had hydraulic lifts at each end to lower and raise horse lorries, and stairs to a separate tunnel for pedestrians. This shows the surface buildings at the northern end of the tunnel. The tower housed the hydraulic accumulator which stored water under pressure for the lifts in the circular building behind it. The arches to the left were entrances for pedestrians. The tunnel was closed to road vehicles in the 1940s, but the pedestrian tunnel remained open until the 1980s. The vehicular tunnels have been filled with sand, and the north rotunda is now a casino. The accumulator tower has been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
