Scope and Content Lancefield Engine Works, No 181 Lancefield Street, Glasgow From 1912, this complex of buildings was developed as the diesel engine works of Harland & Wolff Ltd. It incorporated various older buildings, the oldest of which was the office of David Napier's Lancefield Engine Works, dating from 1821. This shows the Warroch Street frontage of the eastern end of the works, between Warroch and Hydepark streets. The terracotta brick and tall windows are typical of Harland & Wolff. Note the tiny time office entrances halfway along. The London & Glasgow Engineering & Iron Shipbuilding Co, acquired the Lancefield works from William Beardmore & Co in 1905, and re-equipped it. It was greatly extended by Harland & Wolff between the wars. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
