Scope and Content Seed Store, St Marnock Street and St Marnock Place, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire Like many market towns, Kilmarnock had, until the late 20th century, an extensive trade in grass and corn seeds. This was the largest of the purpose-built seed stores, with machinery, originally steam-driven, for cleaning seeds. This shows the store from the north-west. On the left is the former boiler house, and at the far end was a shop facing on to St Marnock Street. Note the louvres on the lower part of the windows to keep the store well ventilated. This store remained in use until the 1980s, and was then sold for conversion into a pub and restaurant. The boiler house chimney has been removed, but otherwise the exterior is little changed.
