Scope and Content Mill tailrace and bridge, Ballochmyle House, Catrine, East Ayrshire Catrine grew up round a large cotton-spinning mill established in 1787 by Sir Claud Alexander of Ballochmyle and David Dale, Scotland's leading late 18th-century industrialist. It was planned on a grid, but the buildings varied considerably in character. This shows a bridge in the policies of Ballochmyle House, the residence of Sir Claud Alexander. The bridge crosses the Burn o' Need where it enters the River Ayr. To the right is the end of the tailrace of the cotton mill lade. The original mill wheel of 1787 was replaced in 1827 by two 15.24m wheels, designed by William Fairbairn. The waterworks needed to operate these wheels included lengthening the tailrace to the point seen in this view. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
