Scope and Content Kelvinside Station, 1051 Great Western Road, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This station was built for the Glasgow Central Railway, a Caledonian Railway subsidiary, to designs by JJ Burnet, a leading Glasgow architect. It was on one of the railway's two routes to Maryhill, and was intended to serve a select suburb. This view shows the frontage of the building to Great Western Road. It closed to passengers in 1942, and was in 1966 being used as a dwelling house. It is designed in the French-inspired 'Beaux Arts' style favoured by Burnet. The building has had mixed fortunes since the 1960s, including a fire after conversion to a restaurant, and subsequent refurbishment. The front remains as designed, but alterations have been made at the rear. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
