Scope and Content Upper Dens Weaving Factory, Prince's Street, Dundee (Dundee City council area) This mill was built to house power looms weaving hand-spun linen yarn into sailcloth and other heavy linens. It was built for Baxter Brothers, and was the largest factory of its kind in Dundee in its day. This view shows the top of the east gable of the factory, with the bellcote for the works bell, and the urn finials characteristic of Dundee mill design. The attic, with its oval windows, contains Gothic cast iron roof trusses. The works closed in 1978, and the Upper Dens factory has been converted into flats. The Lower Dens Flax Spinning Mill, added to the Upper Works in 1865-66. is currently (2001) in low-grade multiple industrial use. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
