Scope and Content Hydepark Locomotive Works, 170 Ayr Street, Springburn, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This works was founded in 1860 by Neilson and Co to replace an earlier works in Hydepark Street, Anderston. The new site was rail connected, unlike the old. It was greatly enlarged and extended over the years up to the First World War. This view shows the centre of the main office block in Ayr Street, probably built in 1885, with the gable of the later erecting shop to the right. The arched central doorway was heightened after construction to cope with larger locomotives. Neilson and Co, by that time Neilson, Reid and Co, became part of the North British Locomotive Company Limited in 1903. The company was in difficulties in the early 1960s, and the Hydepark Works closed in 1961. It has since been demolished. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
