Scope and Content Bridge, Tranent- Cockenzie Waggonway, near Tranent, East Lothian (East Lothian council area) The Tranent-Cockenzie Waggonway was built by the York Buildings Co in 1722, and was the first railway in Scotland. It was still in use when the North British Railway opened in 1846, and this bridge was built to carry the waggonway over the railway. This view shows the bridge from the south east, with a road bridge behind. The waggonway bridge is of a standard North British Railway type, with arched cast iron ribs made in two halves, and supported on masonry abutments. This bridge had been disused for many years in 1966, and was removed when the East Coast main line was electrified in the 1980s. Parts of the route of the waggonway can still be traced.
