Scope and Content St Leonard's Paper Mill, Lasswade, Midlothian (Edinburgh City council area) This paper mill was founded in about 1792 by William Simpson to make hand-made paper. A paper machine was installed in 1832. The works was latterly owned by John Tod and Co Ltd. This view shows the works from the north west, illustrating its riverside location, chosen because the mill was originally water-powered, and also because paper-making uses a great deal of water. The boiler house is on the left. This mill closed in 1966, and the machinery sold off. The buildings have since been demolished. The valleys of the North and South Esk in this part of Midlothian were noted for paper manufacture from the 17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
