Scope and Content St Leonard's Paper Mill, Lasswade, Midlothian (Edinburgh City council area) This stationary steam engine drove machinery in the paper mill, and its exhaust steam was used in the drying rolls of the paper machine. The engine was built by Hick, Hargreaves and Co Ltd, Bolton and was of the Uniflow type, in which they specialised. This view shows the engine from the cylinder end. The cylinder is unusually long, as the used steam was exhausted from the middle of the cylinder. Note the arrangement for removing the cylinder cover for maintenance. This mill closed in 1966, and the machinery sold off. The buildings have since been demolished. The valleys of the North and South Esk in this part of Midlothian were noted for paper manufacture from the 17th century. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
