Scope and Content Lower basin, Forth and Clyde Canal, Bowling, Dunbartonshire (West Dunbartonshire council area) This section of the Forth and Clyde Canal was the last to be completed, and was designed by Robert Whitworth and opened in 1790. This is the entrance basin, linked to the river Clyde and to Bowling Harbour by a pair of tidal locks. This view shows the basin from the south west, with the Custom House and Canal and Harbour Office in the centre. The hydraulically operated swing railway bridge behind was opened in 1896 by the Lanarkshire and Dumbartonshire Railway. This basin continued in use after the closure of the main line of the canal in 1962, and is seen here in use by pleasure craft and house boats. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
