Scope and Content Johnstone Railway Station, Thorn Brae, Johnstone, Renfrewshire Opened in 1840 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, Johnstone Railway Station was completely remodelled by the Glasgow & South Western Railway c.1890, in order to cope with increasing traffic. This shows the station from the west. The covered footbridge was typical of the Glasgow & South Western's provision at its larger through stations. The road overbridge at the far end is the 1840 structure, later widened. This line has now been electrified, and the awnings have been removed. The wooden building on the Ayr-bound platform (right) has gone, and the footbridge has been replaced. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
