Description Johnstone Station View from NE

Date 1966

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 588496

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Johnstone Railway Station, Thorn Brae, Johnstone, Renfrewshire This station was opened in 1840 by the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, and completely remodelled by the Glasgow & South Western Railway in about 1890, to cope with increasing traffic. This shows the station from the east, with the main offices on the Glasgow-bound platform, and a smaller wooden waiting room on the other side. The platforms are linked by a covered footbridge. Note the extensive awnings. This line has now been electrified, and the awnings have been removed. The wooden building on the Ayr-bound platform (left) has gone, and the footbridge has been replaced.
