Scope and Content Clyde Engineering Works (Loudon Machine Tool Works), John Lang Street, Johnstone, Renfrewshire Established in the mid-19th century as the Peockland Engine Works, this works was extended in the 1890s as the Clyde Engineering Works by Loudon Brothers, who specialised in lathe and planing machine manufacture. This shows the front of the complex showing the larger workshops added by Loudon Brothers in the 1890s. These were steel-framed with extensive roof glazing in a manner fashionable at the time. Loudon Brothers became part of the Scottish Machine Tool Corporation in 1938. Declining demand for that firm's products, and international competition led to its liquidation in the mid-1960s. The site of this works is now covered with houses. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
