Date 1966

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 588490

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content High Street Mill (Barbush Mill Linen Thread Works), High Street, Johnstone, Renfrewshire This mill was built in the early 19th century as a cotton-spinning mill, of fireproof construction, and was taken over in 1849, with the adjacent Old Barbush Mill, by Finlayson, Bousfield & Co for making linen thread. This shows the mill from the north-west. It was originally water-powered, and the chimney was added by Finlayson, Bousfield & Co. The windows are unusually large and numerous for a cotton-spinning mill. Finlayson, Bousfield & Co eventually became part of The Linen Thread Co Ltd, a defensive amalgamation of linen thread makers in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Johnstone Works had closed by 1966. This mill still stands. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
