Scope and Content Atlantic and Pacific Mills, Seedhill, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills were founded in 1812, by the brothers James and John Clark, for the manufacture of cotton thread. With the large-scale manufacture of sewing machines, the sewing cotton trade expanded dramatically, and Clarks prospered. This shows the main Atlantic and Pacific mills from the north-east. The former was built in 1872 for spinning, and the latter in 1878 for twisting. The tall central block was added in 1886. To the right is part of the former Seedhill Shawl Factory. The Atlantic and Pacific mills and the link block were demolished in 1972-3 after a period of disuse, but parts of the mills remained in use until the 1980s. The Domestic Finishing and Mile End mills and shawl factory still survived in 2001. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
