Paisley, Seedhill Road, Tannery General View

SC 588477

Description Paisley, Seedhill Road, Tannery General View

Date 1966

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 588477

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Seedhill Tannery, Seedhill, Paisley, Renfrewshire This tannery was founded in the 18th century, and was acquired in 1872 by W J & W Lang, who modernised it and who still owned it in 1966. It was still in use in 2001, one of only a handful of tanneries left in west central Scotland. This shows the tannery from the west, looking along Seedhill. The two-storeyed and attic building in the centre, and the flat-roofed drying shed to the left appear to pre-date the Lang takeover. Tanning was a common industry throughout Scotland until the 1950s and 1960s, with leather being used extensively for shoemaking and repair, horse harnesses, belts for driving machinery, and many other purposes.
