Scope and Content Atlantic and Pacific Mills, Seedhill, Paisley, Renfrewshire These mills were founded in 1812 for the manufacture of cotton thread, by the brothers James and John Clark. The sewing cotton trade expanded dramatically with the large-scale manufacture of sewing machines, and Clarks prospered. This shows the mills from the north-west, with the main Atlantic and Pacific mills in the centre. The former was built in 1872 for spinning, and the latter in 1878 for twisting. The tall central link block was added in 1886. The Atlantic and Pacific mills and the link block were demolished in 1972-3 after a period of disuse, but parts of the complex remained in use until the mid-1980s. The Domestic Finishing and Mile End mills still survived in 2001. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
