SC 588309

Description Glasgow, Charing Cross Station General View

Date 1966

Collection Papers of Professor John R Hume, economic and industrial historian, Glasgow, Scotland

Catalogue Number SC 588309

Category On-line Digital Images

Scope and Content Charing Cross Railway Station, Nos 114-16 North Street, Glasgow This station was opened in 1886 by the Glasgow City & District Railway, a subsidiary of the North British Railway, and constructed to provide an underground route under the city centre between existing lines to east and west. This shows the surface building in North Street, housing the booking and other offices. The platforms are in a cutting to the right, reached by covered staircases from this building. The double V logo refers to the electrification of the line in 1960. This building was demolished in 1969 to make way for Glasgow's inner ring road, and replaced by a new surface building further to the east between Bath Street and Elmbank Crescent.
