Scope and Content Former Cranstonhill Foundry (Iron), No 58 Elliot Street, Glasgow This works was built c.1854 for James Aitken & Co, engineers, millwrights and founders. It was the first works in what became a notable street of industrial buildings. It was one of the largest engineering works in Glasgow at the time of its construction. This shows the frontage from the south-east. It is seen rendered in this view but is constructed of sandstone ashlar, apparently as a showpiece. The large central doorway with its glazed fanlight gives an idea of the scale of the products. As with most 19th-century industrial buildings, this one has been through a succession of uses. In the 1890s it was the Neptune Iron, Brass & Copper Works. In the mid-1990s it was converted into offices, and the render partly removed. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
