Scope and Content Ballochmyle Viaduct, Mauchline, East Ayrshire Ballochmyle Viaduct was built 1846-8as part of the Cumnock Branch of the Glasgow, Paisley, Kilmarnock & Ayr Railway, and designed by John Miller. It is built of red sandstone, quarried beside the structure. This shows the viaduct from the south-east, with its central 55.2m span flanked by groups of three smaller arches. Because of the depth of the gorge of the River Ayr the full height of the structure cannot be seen in this view. The central span of this viaduct is believed to be the longest ever constructed in masonry to carry railway traffic. Though nominally built as part of a branch line, it was in fact designed for a main line from Glasgow to Dumfries and Carlisle. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
