Scope and Content Glencairn Hosiery Works, No 22 Grange Street, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire Hosiery manufacture was one of Kilmarnock's major industries in the 19th century, and some concerns continued to operate into the later 20th century, including this one. Foreign competition hit the industry hard at the end of the century. This shows the works from the north-west. The building is of domestic character, and it may have been converted from a house, though it was not unusual for small factories to be built to look like the houses that surrounded them. Note the 'pend' or close giving access to the rear of the building. That this was obviously built to take carts supports the view that this building was built as a factory. It was still in operation in 1966. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
