Scope and Content Caledonia Works, West Langlands Street, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire This was one of several engineering works in Ayrshire established in the mid-19th century to supply the coal and iron industries, which were stimulated by railway building. This one was founded by Andrew Barclay. This shows the rear of the works, with the gables of the heavy machine and erecting shops and the end of the light machine shop. The erecting shop was built in about 1900 to handle large locomotives and other machinery. Barclays specialised in colliery and ironworks engineering, and particularly in industrial steam locomotives, many of which have been preserved. This part of the works was abandoned in the 1990s.
