Scope and Content Kilmarnock Railway Works, Kilmarnock, East Ayrshire In the mid-1850s the Glasgow & South Western Railway moved its workshops from a cramped site in Glasgow to a large purpose-built works on the outskirts of Kilmarnock, laid out on a spacious plan. This shows one of the 1855 blocks, derelict by 1966, with its large central arched access for railway vehicles and flanking workshops. The masonry construction with round-headed windows is typical of the mid-19th century. Kilmarnock Works declined in importance after the grouping of the railways in 1923, and by 1966 was only in marginal use. Much of the complex was demolished then and the remainder in the 1970s.
