Scope and Content Buchanan Street Station, Port Dundas Road, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) The first station on this site was built for the Caledonian Railway and opened in 1849. It was cheaply constructed in wood, and remained in use until the early 20th century, when it was rebuilt, still partly in wood, but with glazed roof and awnings. This view shows the street frontage of the station, from the south west. The glazed awning over the carriageway was typical of Caledonian Railway practice of the period. The cranes in the background were building new railway offices. This station was closed in 1966, and demolished soon after. When it was first built it handled trains from England, but after the opening of the first Glasgow Central Station it was reduced to handling trains to north and east Scotland.
