Scope and Content Falkirk Gas Works (Falkirk council area) This gas works was situated next to the Forth and Clyde Canal, and was probably designed to draw supplies of coal via the canal. It was a large coal-gas plant, latterly using vertical retorts. This view shows the works from the north east. showing the vertical-retort plant, apparently re-using part of a large horizontal-retort house. The steel-framed construction, with brick infilling, was typical of late coal-gas plants. This works closed in 1963, and was demolished in 1969. It was one of the largest vertical-retort works in Scotland outside the cities. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
