Scope and Content Cardowan Colliery, Stepps, Lanarkshire (North Lanarkshire council area) This colliery was sunk by Nimmo and Dunlop in the 1920s. It was partly re-equipped in the 1950s by the National Coal Board, to produce coking coal for the Scottish iron industry, with a new shaft and over-shaft electric winders. This view shows the boiler installation, with the fronts of two of the six hand-fired Lancashire boilers. This was a very typical colliery installation, robust if not particularly efficient. The colliery was a gassy one, and latterly the methane was drained from above the seam being worked, piped to the surface, and used as a fuel for the colliery boilers. When the pit closed one of the winding engines was preserved at Summerlee. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
