Scope and Content Bonawe Iron Works, Taynuilt, Argyll (Argyll and Bute council area) Bonawe Iron Works was established in 1752 by the partners of the Newland Co, a Lake District charcoal-fuelled iron-smelting works. They were attracted to Bonawe by abundant water-power and woodland for charcoal burning. This view shows the iron ore shed, in a state of decay. The ore used was haematite, a very pure ore imported by sea from Lancashire. It was stored in bins in this shed, to keep it dry. This photograph was taken when the repair of the buildings had begun, in anticipation of taking the site into State care. The works had been closed since the 1870s, though some of the buildings had been used for agricultural purposes. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
