Scope and Content London Road Ironworks, 47 Summer Street, Glasgow (Glasgow City council area) This works was founded in 1865 by Duncan Stewart and Co, who at first specialised in making sugar machinery, but who later turned to making iron and steelworks plant, textile, and textile finishing machinery, and even a few steam lorries. This view shows the Summer street frontage of the works. The single-storey range on the corner was probably part of the 1865 works, but the corrugated-iron clad erecting shop, and the brick ranges at the far end are later. The company was acquired by William Beardmore and Company Limited in 1902, when it became insolvent. It was eventually acquired by Davy United of Sheffield, who used it to make steelworks equipment. It closed in the early 1970s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
