Scope and Content Thistle Pottery, Pipe Street, Portobello, Edinburgh (Edinburgh City council area) This pottery was established in about 1879 by A and W Buchan and Company to manufacture stoneware pottery. They initially made stoneware bottles and jars, but by the 1960s were making table ware and ornamental goods. This view shows the pottery from the south west, with the tops of the two bottle kilns built in 1906 and 1909, out of use by 1966. As with most potteries, the complex had been much altered over the years. Buchans moved to Crieff in the early 1970s, and the Portobello buildings were demolished, apart from the two kilns, which have been preserved as free-standing monuments by Edinburgh City Council.
