Scope and Content Wyndford Lock, Forth and Clyde Canal, near Banknock, Dunbartonshire (North Lanarkshire council area) This is the lock at the eastern end of the summit level of the Forth and Clyde Canal. The level was completed to the outskirts of Glasgow in 1775. The canal was closed in 1962, and this was the last lock to retain its gates intact. This view shows the lock from the west, with the standard double-leaf bascule bridge over the lock chamber in the foreground, and the lock-keeper's house beyond. Note the high standard of care of structures closed for canal traffic for four years. Subsequently the bascule bridge was replaced by a fixed concrete beam structure, and the gates were cut down, as elsewhere on the canal. The canal is due to reopen in 2001 as part of the Millennium Link scheme. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
