Scope and Content Queen Street Station, Dundas Street/West George Street, Glasgow (City of Glasgow council area) This station was opened in 1842 by the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway, as Glasgow's first city centre terminus. A church built in 1819 was taken over as offices. In 1855-6 a new carriage entrance was added in Dundas Street. This view shows the façade of the 1855-6 building, as adapted c1960. Originally the smaller arches were for pedestrians, and the outer large arches were for carriages. To the right is the former West George Street Independent Chapel. The main part of the 1842 station was replaced in 1880, on a larger scale. The buildings seen in this view were demolished in the 1960s, but the 1880 train shed still survives, and was overhauled in the late 1990s. Source: RCAHMS contribution to SCRAN.
